Posture of the Week – Standing Head to Knee

POSTURE OF THE WEEK – Standing Head to Knee - Dandayamana-Janushirasana

STANDING HEAD TO KNEE POSE – Demonstrated by our lovely teacher Laura, she says

“I love this posture! For me it is the ultimate test of mental determination, concentration, will-power, patience and focus in the Bikram beginner’s series. When you perform this posture, you can’t be thinking about what you are going to have for dinner, you have to be in the present moment”

Benefits of the posture: 

Builds focus and determination

Strengthens the hamstrings and leg muscles

Works the muscles of the back, biceps and triceps

When you bring forehead to knee it creates a front side compression therefore squeezing and flushing out internal abdominal organs such as pancreas, gall bladder and spleen

Tips for your next class: 

Concentrate on continuously contracting the thigh muscles of your standing leg – you can practise this outside of the class too, when you are brushing your teeth or waiting in a queue!

Keep trying! When you fall out of this posture, get back into the posture by starting over again at the very beginning, move forward step by step building the complete and correct form slowly and sequentially.
